Harvesters applaud USDA recognition of fishermen as “Farmers of the Sea”, Appointment of Seafood Liaison

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Developments reflect years of work to access USDA programs for domestic seafood

Washington, DC  |  April 15, 2026 — Seafood Harvesters of America (SHA), the leading national organization representing the U.S. commercial seafood industry, today welcomed Secretary of Agriculture Rollins’ announcement of an Office of Seafood at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It marks a significant opening of access to Federal food and agriculture programs for domestic seafood.

Over the past two years, SHA and its members have worked tirelessly to build stronger connections between the seafood sector and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, advocating for policies that recognize fishermen as core contributors to the nation’s food system. These include numerous meetings with members of Congress and Administration officials to encourage a whole of government approach for the seafood sector.

“America’s fishermen take immense pride in helping to feed this country,” said Hannah Heimbuch, Board President of SHA. “We harvest one of the healthiest, most sustainable protein sources in the world, in an industry made up primarily of family businesses. With better access to USDA loan and grant programs, independent harvesters and seafood businesses can be more competitive and successful in this ever-shifting landscape.”

“We are food producers. Recognizing fishermen as ‘farmers of the sea’ helps bridge a longstanding gap in America’s food system” said Brad Pettinger, SHA Board Member.

“Whether you’re fishing in the Gulf, Alaska, or the Atlantic, the goal is the same: deliver high-quality food and support your community,” said Buddy Guindon, SHA Board Member. “With the right investments—like those we’re seeing from USDA—we can build more value here at home, support jobs, and strengthen coastal economies.”

“Thank you, Secretaries Rollins and Lutnick, for recognizing the vital role of the U.S. seafood industry in our nation’s economy and food security,” said Joe Bundrant, CEO of Trident Seafoods and member of SHA. “I’ve spent my entire career working to ensure a strong, sustainable, and thriving American seafood industry—and it’s encouraging to see that commitment reflected at the highest levels.”

“We’re proud that leaders from our membership – Buddy Guindon, Brad Pettinger and Joe Bundrant –  were included in this important conversation,” said Heimbuch, referring to a fisheries roundtable held just before today’s press conference. “Direct engagement between the seafood industry and policymakers is essential to building effective, durable policy. SHA looks forward to continuing its work with USDA and other federal partners to ensure that domestic seafood plays a central role in America’s food system.”
