WASHINGTON— Seafood Harvesters of America, the largest national association of commercial fishermen committed to sustainable seafood, released the following statement from Leigh Habegger, Executive Director, after President Biden announced his recent nominations for ocean-related positions in his Administration:

“We are pleased to see Dr. Rick Spinrad, an experienced oceanographer with a long history of working at the nexus of science and policy, nominated to be the next NOAA Administrator. As the former Chief Scientist for NOAA, Dr. Spinrad understands the importance of keeping science at the heart of NOAA's mission and work.

“Many challenges lie ahead for the agency, including: addressing climate change, balancing existing ocean uses with proposed offshore development projects, encouraging climate ready fisheries, and considering the food security needs of our nation through seafood. We stand ready to work with Dr. Spinrad to tackle these challenges through a process that continues to have sound science at its center and includes diverse stakeholder perspectives.

“If confirmed, Dr. Spinrad will bring decades worth of experience that will serve our country well.

“We also welcome Monica Medina’s nomination to be assistant secretary for the State Department’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Science Affairs. She will bring extensive experience in the international oceans and climate space that will help the U.S. remain a global leader in tackling climate change and ensuring abundant oceans.

We look forward to working with Medina to safeguard our oceans’ health in the face of climate change while simultaneously providing food to millions around the world.”
